Symptoms

Symptoms of carpel tunnel may include:

N

Tingling or numbness- Usually thumb and index, middle or ring fingers are affected but not little finger. Its radiating from wrist to arm. These symptoms often occur while holding a newspaper, steering wheel, phone or wake up from sleep.

N

Weakness- May experience weakness in your hand and drop objects.

N

Paresthesia

N

Impairment of digital function

N

Sensory loss

N

Wasting of thenar eminence (thumb)

N

Loss of grip

Causes

The causes of carpel tunnel syndrome may include:

E
Wrist fracture or dislocation
E
Chronic illness, such as diabetes
E
Inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis
E
Obesity
E
Mechanical overuse (repetitive flexing of wrist)

Diagnosis

E
Ultrasound and MRI are the two imaging modalities.
E
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are the diagnostic method of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Detailed physical assessment through special tests and neuromuscular examination are the diagnostic methods in physiotherapy to rule out carpal tunnel syndrome. This assessment and exercise programs can prevent minor surgeries and helps the individual to become functionally independent and to lead a stress-free life.

Treatments

IFT and US are the modalities that helps in pain management. Once the pain got reduced proper exercise program is needed to stretch and strengthen the involved muscles. Neural mobilization is also very helpful to reduce the symptoms and to improve the conduction.

Our Musculoskeletal Wellness Program uses Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), which is an advanced modality for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and its very effective in carpel tunnel syndrome cases. ESWT uses sound waves (high amplitude pulses of mechanical energy) to breakup infected tissues and stimulate the healing process. The energy triggers the regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. ESWT is used to treat chronic, sub-acute and acute conditions. After the shockwave session, Cryotherapy is advised to avoid muscle soreness.

In addition, we can employ Pulsed Cell Repair Therapy (PCRT) for the treatment of chronic cases of carpel tunnel syndrome, which directs a series of electromagnetic impulses through the injured tissue. Each pulse induces a tiny electrical signal that stimulates cellular repair, and harnesses the body’s own ability to heal itself. This natural signal promotes the body to repair damaged or worn tissues/cartilages and to maintain healthy and proper functioning of the joint.
