What Is Localized Cryotherapy?
Localized cryotherapy applies controlled, targeted cold directly to a specific area of the body — a joint, muscle group, or site of injury — rather than the whole body. It is a non-invasive modality used to reduce pain, calm inflammation, and support recovery, without medication or downtime.
How It Works
Controlled cold exposure causes local blood vessels to constrict, which helps reduce swelling and slow the inflammatory processes that drive pain in an injured or overworked area. As the treated area rewarms afterward, blood flow increases, which can support the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. This activates the body’s own self-healing and muscle-strengthening mechanisms, and does not carry the side effects associated with anti-inflammatory medication.
What a Session Involves
The treatment is applied directly to the target area for a short, controlled duration. Sessions are quick, non-invasive, and require no recovery time — most patients return to normal activity immediately afterward.
Clinical Evidence & Approvals
No Side Effects
Cryotherapy activates the body’s self-healing and muscle-strengthening mechanisms without the side effects associated with anti-inflammatory medication.
Established Use in Sports Medicine
Cold-based recovery modalities are widely used in sports medicine and musculoskeletal rehabilitation to manage pain and inflammation after injury or intense activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is localized cryotherapy painful?
No. Most patients describe it as a strong cooling sensation rather than pain, and it settles quickly once treatment ends.
How is this different from an ice pack?
Localized cryotherapy delivers controlled, consistent cold to the specific treatment area as part of a supervised clinical session, integrated with your broader rehabilitation plan — rather than an unsupervised, uneven application at home.
Can cryotherapy be combined with other treatments?
Yes. At Maana Health, cryotherapy is typically used alongside ESWT, Pulsed Signal Therapy, and structured exercise as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.
Is there any downtime after a session?
No. Sessions are quick and non-invasive, and most patients return to normal activity immediately afterward.
